Your dog’s hair grows in cycles and once their hair reaches a certain maturity point it will begin to shed. It is important to keep your dog’s coat regularly maintained to avoid shedding on your furniture, clothes and in your car. Some breeds shed more than others and their skin can become itchy and they may experience discomfort from the excess hair and dander. You should aim to de-shed your dog at least once a month to ensure their coat stays healthy.

A common misconception is that the excess hair your dog is losing is what causes your allergies when in reality it is all the dander which collects airborne allergens. Once a dog is de-shedded properly it’ll help relieve your allergies. It is important to properly de-shed your dog and not just cut the hair because you run the risk of the hair not growing back properly.
What can I do at home to prevent shedding?
In between your routine grooming sessions there are some things you can do at home to prevent shedding. Feeding your dog a healthy balanced diet with a high quality dog food will help your dog’s coat grow in healthy. In addition to a good diet brushing or combing your dog will help remove dead hairs and skin before they begin to shed. Keep in mind dogs shed extra during the Spring and Fall months due to the temperature change and should be having regular baths to help with shedding and matted hair.
